"Remind me later" is one of the most expensive buttons. Why updates are the foundation of security, and how to schedule them without disrupting work.
Every update that arrives on your phone, computer or server often closes an already known vulnerability. Once an update is released, the details of the flaw become public — and attackers look for exactly those devices that haven’t been updated yet.
What needs updating
- Operating systems — Windows, macOS, Linux servers;
- Browsers — Chrome, Edge, Firefox (the most common “entry door”);
- Office software — Microsoft 365, PDF software;
- Business applications — accounting, CRM;
- Network devices — routers, firewalls, access points;
- Video surveillance — recorders and cameras.
End-of-support systems
When a manufacturer ends support for an operating system or application, security updates stop — new vulnerabilities stay open forever. For example, standard support for Windows 10 ended on October 14, 2025.
💡 Tip: Keep an inventory of your company’s computers and servers, with their operating system and version. That makes it easy to see which devices need updating or replacing.
How to do it without disrupting work
- Automatic updates — enabled on computers, scheduled for nights or weekends;
- Servers — in a planned maintenance window and after a backup;
- Test first — try critical business application updates on one or two computers;
- Centralized management — the administrator can see from one place which devices haven’t been updated.
Antivirus is not an alternative to updates
Antivirus or EDR is an essential additional layer, but it can’t replace updates. Both together, plus regular backups, form the minimum foundation of business IT security.
